Hi Roland,

The next GBSF League event (2 of 4) takes place on Sunday 25th May, 2008

at the following venue:

The Leys Sports Complex, Trumpington Road, Cambridge, CB2 2AD

Times will be as follows:

Weigh-ins: 10.00am - 10.40am

Matchings: 10.40am - 11.15am (35 minutes for fighters to relax, etc)

Fights start: 11.15am onwards in two 'open rings'

We will also be celebrating our (the GBSF) 10th Anniversary, so we hope that at least a few of our foreign friends, such as yourself, will also come over and take part.

We ask that all groups of foreign competitors also bring Officials along with them if at all possible. We reserve the right to restrict the number of foreign competitors who do not let us know they are coming well in advance.

Anyone who needs accommodation for Saturday night (Friday too perhaps) should contact me as early as possible. I repeat that all foreign competitors should contact us as soon as possible. It goes without saying that Eurostar tickets, for example, are also much cheaper if booked well in advance of the dates of travel.

Entrance fees: Competitors £8. Spectators £5 (£3 if aged 13 or under)

I should add that the Leys is a superb venue, with the the potential to allow us to showcase Savate to a much wider audience.

FIS President, Mr Gilles Le Duigou, has said that he will attend the event. Needless to say, he will be our Guest of Honour. I would like to get as much publicity (and even some sponsorship) for the event too. Anyone who wishes to assist with that, please contact me without further delay (ASAP).

Pugil

A bientôt
Roland, Kévin de Lorient (France)

RE: GBSF Savate Assaut League 2008

Event 1 Oxford Sunday 9th March

Big, big thanks to Laura and the Oxford team for hosting the event, and to the judging team in its entirety for keeping rowdy fighters under check. ;)

It was also great to see so many people, including Roland and Kevin who came all the way from Lorient (France) to play!

What a fun day! 'Can't wait till the next event!

Just wanted to say thank you for running a really good event today - I thoroughly enjoyed myself, great group of people, and some good fights (although a win for me would have been nice! Next time.....)

Event 1 - Oxford

Dear Savateurs,

I invite you all to participate in the first GBSF competition of 2008, which will be held at Oxford on Sunday 9th March.
Weigh-ins will be 10.10-10.40am, with fights starting at 11am. Fights will continue until 5pm and the competition will close by 6pm.
The cost will be £8 to compete and £5 to spectate, paid at the door.
To enter please send me (through your instructor) your name, weight division (in groups as listed below) and date of birth as soon as possible, before Midnight of Wednesday 5th March. Please also indicate whether any of your group will be able to judge or referee. (Anyone who comes just to officiate and not compete, and does a reasonable amount of it, will not be charged entry.)
The venue is South Oxford Community Centre, directions at the bottom of this email. Note that parking is limited, and it would be wise to bring something with you for lunch. Oxford traffic is unreliable on Saturdays so please leave plenty of time to get here.
Please forward to other savateurs and other clubs, including internationals that you know. Feel free to contact me with queries.
I look forward to seeing you all soon!
Laura Gilbert

DIRECTIONS:

South Oxford Community Centre is situated at the end of Lake Street, off the Abingdon Road in Oxford, about one mile south of the city centre. It is within easy cycling and walking distance from the centre of town, and plenty of buses pass close by.

Please note that parking at the Centre is on the street and is very limited - we therefore encourage visitors to walk, cycle, or use public transport. There are cycle racks at the side of the building. If you do come by car, please show consideration for local residents when you park.

Here's a map of our immediate location.

Here's a map showing our location in Oxford.

Walking or cycling from the centre of town

Starting from Carfax, head south down St Aldates, passing the police station and going over Folly bridge onto the Abingdon Road. You will eventually pass Hinksey Park on your right, and will see a post box close to the end of Lake Street. Turn right down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right.

Buses to South Oxford Community Centre

There are frequent buses running up and down the Abingdon Road, stopping near the end of Lake Street. Going north (towards the centre of town) the stop is just past a post box, next to Hinksey Park. Going south, the stop is shortly after the entrance to the Four Pillars Hotel, just past the end of Lake Street.

Ask the driver for "Lake Street".

You can catch the following buses:

Most pick up in the centre of town at St Aldates, a short distance past the Town Hall.

Please note that the Park and Ride bus does not stop on the Abingdon Road.

Cycling/By car from East Oxford/Cowley

Go over Donnington Bridge and turn right at the junction with the Abingdon Road. Head towards the centre of town for about half a mile. Lake Street is on the left hand side, shortly after the Berkshire Arms pub on the left and the Four Pillars Hotel on the right. Turn down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right.

By car from the A34, north or south (e.g. from Abingdon, Didcot, Bicester)

Leave the A34 at the Hinksey Hill interchange, signposted A423 and "Scout Camp". This is the first main Oxford turn-off if you are coming from the South, and the third if you are coming from the north. Take the left exit at the roundabout at the end of the slip-road and follow a short section of dual carriageway. At the next roundabout, turn left towards the centre of Oxford.

You will pass the Park and Ride on the left and slightly further on, a junction with Donnington Bridge/Weirs Lane on your right. Don't turn off - continue on the main road for another half a mile. Lake Street is on the left hand side, shortly after the Berkshire Arms pub on the left and the Four Pillars Hotel on the right. Turn down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right.

RE: 2008 Competitions

To enter these competitions you would need to be a member of a GBSF recognised club and hold a valid GBSF licence and insurance.
It is recommended that you attain at least Red Glove before fighting under Assaut rules and Yellow Glove before considering Combat.
Your club instructor will be able to give you more information, or post back here again.

Just out of interest, what is the criteria for taking part in these events? Is it anyone that can turn up, or do you need to be selected?
