Welcome to all new members to the Forum, most recently Trevor and Asif. You got some nice pics at the last league event in Cambridge Asif. I'll have to have a chat with you about photography the next time we meet up.
hi all, i started training at James' London camp recently.
I find Savate great fun and hopefully it will be a good way for me to get fit and reduce the significant excess weight I've been carrying around for a few years.
You may have seen me at the recent tourney in Cambs holding a big camera attached to an even bigger pole; I got the opportunity to meet some of you there, and witnessed some really good fights.
As a relative newcomer to savate I'd say its the best form of exercise I've ever done . . . having spent my distant youth and schooldays rushing around squash and tennis courts, football pitches and everything else I just wish I'd discovered it sooner.. . .
I get to Wed classes when I can but work and distance ( I live about 45 mins from Cambs ) means its not always possible. But great when I do.
Would be really good to find someone local who trains and try and get together during the week. Anyone live near March out in the Fens ! ?
Cant speak highly enough of Julie and Ollie for their commitment and style of instruction. !
Hi Paul, There are plenty of good exercises but can be difficult to describe in text - I'll have a go. 1.) The first one to start off with improves how the muscles work together and is good for those who are either muscle bound or have specific/generalised weakness. Lie on your back with your knee pointing straight up to the ceiling. Do very small, very slow circles (imagine a laser pointer on your knee drawing a circle on the ceiling) gradually getting larger until they are maximal and then get smaller again (should take about 3-5 minutes). Repeat going in the opposite direction and then on the opposite leg. The circles should ideally be perfectly round and putting a hand gently on the side of the leg can aid in giving feedback for this exercise. 2.) This exercise strengthens a specific muscle called gluteus medius which is often weak in runners, team sports players and martial artists. It's weakness can cause knee, hip and back pain/stiffness. Lie on your side in a straight line so your hips/pelvis are/is perpendicular with the ground (this is very important and a hand on the upper hip can help you sustain this position). Move your top foot one foot above and six inches behind the lower one. Angle your knee towards the ceiling. For a start hold this position 10 x 5 seconds. You can extend this by holding the leg and doing pulses or small circles (max. 6 inch diameter) clockwise and anti-clockwise with a straight leg. Do not let the pelvis fall forwards or backwards and do not lift the leg too high or let it move forward.....
Hi there, I'm a red glove savateuse from Cambridge. I love the sport and the fact that savateurs/savateuses are usually a really friendly and fun bunch of people.
I practise savate to get a good workout, improve my coordination and meet up with these friendly party animals. And, yes, I do like a good play-fight!
I've also started learning canne de combat a little while back (thanks Mogs!!!) and it's really great fun too! And not just because it's one art where I have a chance to beat Rossy or Screwi!!! ;)
Hi Y'all, I am Rossy - I've been doing / living and breathing Savate for a few years now. I know that Dr.T. is away on a well earned break, I am sure he will answer your questions upon his return. I have been told (not by Dr. T) that "Pain is just weakness leaving your body"..........I am not sure I agree ! Correct diet, rest, warm up, stretching, training should not produce pain - walking blindly onto a straight right.....that causes pain !!
Think most of you know me from the Guildford club.
Will have been doing Savate for 7 years in June. Still absolutely love it.
Got my Yellow glove out in France last year and have competed in a couple of World and European championships. All good fun.
Realised recently how effective Savate is against other martial arts.... have joined a 'fighting only' club setup recently near me by a couple of 2nd Dan TKD'ers. It's for people of any art as long as they're black belt or above, most do TKD or Karate. Put it this way.... Savate kicks ass!
Seeya'll soon!
James

Do you know of any good exercises for hips and kees. Mine ache like hell after training. I try to stretch regularly, but it doesn't really help! Any suggestions?
Have been doing Savate for a while now. Starting training when the GBSF was in its early days in a back garden in Orpington with Rob Clark. You still about Rob?
Train mostly by myself nowadays. Going to be opening a club shortly in SE Kent. Anyone interested?
Got kids, got a mortgage and I've got a pair of Savate boot.....what more could I want??!!
Why not introduce yourself to other members on the Forum.
Most of you know me, I'm Ollie but am aka Pugil on various Forums, including this one. You can find out more about me by visiting the Cambridge Academy website http://www.cama.org.uk/ if you want to find out more. As for the rest of you, let's hear what you've got to say about yourselves.
